A single-herb liquid extract of dried leaf of Perilla frutescens, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Zi su ye is the leaf of the purple-leaved form of perilla, an East Asian mint relative with broad ruffled toothed leaves that are deep red-purple on both sides. It is the shiso of Japanese cooking in its red form, used to colour umeboshi plums and pickles, and it will dye a jar of brine magenta within hours. The scent is complex — anise, cumin and cinnamon at once — and quite unlike basil, its nearest kitchen relative.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

People with a perilla allergy, and those sensitive to other mint-family herbs, may react to it. Not for use in pregnancy.
